We are offering a finely executed British Georgian pencil drawing on paper depicting Gisborne Court at Peterhouse (St Peter’s College), Cambridge. The composition shows the north and south elevations of the court within the college grounds, carefully observed and balanced. A subtle flock of birds flying overhead adds movement and atmosphere while preserving the scholarly, architectural focus of the scene. The work is entirely in pencil, with controlled tonal variation, and is protected under glass.
This drawing demonstrates high-quality professional architectural draughtsmanship. Perspective is precise and well judged, proportions are accurate, and architectural elements are rendered with confidence and restraint. Brickwork, stone dressings, windows, chimneys, and rooflines are articulated through disciplined pencil hatching and cross-hatching, creating depth without excess shading. The approach is documentary and topographical rather than romantic, consistent with early nineteenth-century architectural drawings produced for architects, patrons, or as preparatory material for engravings and publications.
Gisborne Court was constructed in 1825–1826 to designs by William McIntosh Brookes, executed in a restrained Gothic Revival style. Only three sides of the court were completed originally, with the west side consisting of a screen wall that has since been demolished. The range on the right incorporates earlier fifteenth-century fabric, refaced during the same building phase. Peterhouse is the oldest and smallest of the traditional Cambridge colleges, and the entire college is Grade I listed. As such, early visual records of later additions like Gisborne Court are historically important and increasingly sought after.
This work is best described as British School, early nineteenth century, and is offered in the manner of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771–1843). Gandy was one of the most accomplished architectural draughtsmen of the Georgian and Regency periods and is best known for his precise, scholarly architectural studies produced for Sir John Soane and other patrons. While this drawing is not attributed directly to Gandy, the technical handling, architectural accuracy, and disciplined composition place it firmly within the same professional tradition of architectural draughtsmanship that Gandy exemplified.
The drawing is signed lower right “Hill Delt.” Research has not identified a documented academic or auction-recorded artist under this exact name, suggesting it may represent a lesser-known or local draughtsman, or a working or studio signature. Regardless of the name, the quality of execution clearly indicates a trained architectural hand consistent with the early nineteenth century.
The drawing is housed in a traditional wooden frame, painted black with a gilt inner slip, and glazed for protection. The frame shows honest age-related wear that complements the period character of the artwork. A metal hanging loop is fitted to the reverse, ready for immediate wall display.
