Description
Powerful surrealist oil painting by Antoni Pitxot Soler, one of the most important Catalan artists connected to Salvador Dalí’s inner circle and a key figure in the visual universe of Cadaqués and Figueres.
Painted in 1985, this work belongs to Pitxot’s mature period and presents one of his most recognizable subjects: a dreamlike mineral landscape built from stones, fragments, shells, fossil-like forms and metamorphic shapes. The composition seems suspended between landscape, archaeology and hallucination, where inert matter becomes almost alive.
The painting is especially strong visually. The lower section is constructed through a dense accumulation of sculptural forms, painted with thick, expressive brushwork and a refined chromatic range of blues, ochres, pinks, whites, greys and earthy tones. Above them, a floating organic form crosses the sky like a surreal apparition, adding theatrical tension and a distinctly Dalinian atmosphere.
Pitxot’s language is immediately identifiable here: rocks that become bodies, fragments that suggest masks, bones, shells or ancient creatures, and a Mediterranean landscape transformed into a psychological stage. The result is not a conventional landscape, but a highly imaginative surrealist vision rooted in the stones and coastline of Cadaqués.
This is a highly decorative yet intellectually rich work, ideal for collectors of Spanish Surrealism, Catalan modern art, Dalí-related artists, Cadaqués painters, Mediterranean symbolism and postwar European painting.
Artist Biography
Antoni Pitxot Soler, also known as Antoni Pichot Soler, was born in Figueres in 1934 and died in 2015. He came from an important artistic family closely connected to the Catalan avant-garde. His uncle, Ramon Pichot, was a painter and a close early influence on Salvador Dalí.
Pitxot trained in drawing under Juan Núñez, the same teacher who had taught Dalí. After living in San Sebastián and Madrid, he settled permanently in Cadaqués in 1966, where he developed his unmistakable pictorial language based on stones, mineral forms, metamorphosis and surrealist landscapes.
His relationship with Salvador Dalí was decisive. Pitxot became one of Dalí’s closest friends and collaborators, participating in the creation of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. His work has a permanent presence in the museum, and he later became director of the Dalí Theatre-Museum and vice-president of the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation.
In 2004 he received the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts, one of Spain’s major cultural distinctions. Today, Pitxot is regarded as one of the essential artists of the Dalí circle and a major figure in Catalan surrealist painting.
Artistic Context / Pictorial Inspiration
This work connects directly with the great surrealist tradition of Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy, while maintaining Pitxot’s deeply personal Mediterranean identity. Its mineral imagery also echoes the dreamlike landscapes of Cadaqués, where stones, sea and memory become the raw material of surrealism.
Unlike purely decorative abstraction, Pitxot’s painting creates a complete symbolic world. The forms appear archaeological, organic and theatrical at once, placing the work between Dalí’s visionary landscapes, Ernst’s fossil-like textures and Tanguy’s strange psychological spaces.
