An exceptional 1986 oil painting by renowned Spanish surrealist Antoni Pitxot, presenting a dense imaginary landscape in which stones, shells and mineral fragments metamorphose into enigmatic human and animal-like figures.
Pitxot transforms the rocky terrain of Cadaqués and Cap de Creus into a theatrical Mediterranean dreamscape. Monumental heads, reclining bodies and fantastic creatures emerge gradually from the accumulation of painted stones, creating a complex visual game between landscape, still life and figurative composition.
The painting is executed with richly layered brushwork and a sophisticated palette of slate blue, dusty rose, ochre, ivory, violet and earthy brown. Against the luminous pink sky, the compact procession of rocky forms acquires an almost mythological presence. The viewer’s perception constantly shifts: what initially appears to be a coastal field of stones becomes a gathering of silent characters inhabiting an invented ancient world.
This work belongs to Pitxot’s most distinctive and internationally recognizable period. Its anthropomorphic rock formations, Mediterranean atmosphere and dreamlike ambiguity embody the singular artistic language that connected him so closely with Salvador Dalí and the Catalan surrealist tradition.

Artist Biography
Antoni Pitxot i Soler was born in Figueres in 1934 into a prominent Catalan family of artists and musicians. He studied under Juan Núñez Fernández, who had also taught Salvador Dalí, and developed his early career through exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Lisbon and other European cities.
In 1966, Pitxot settled permanently in Cadaqués, where the dramatic geology of Cap de Creus became the foundation of his mature artistic language. He collected stones, shells and natural fragments from the surrounding landscape, arranging them into temporary sculptural constructions before translating them into meticulously conceived paintings.
Through this process, Pitxot created a unique world populated by anthropomorphic rocks, mythological figures and mysterious mineral beings. His paintings combine surrealism, classical mythology, Mediterranean landscape and visual metamorphosis.
Pitxot maintained a close personal and artistic relationship with Salvador Dalí and collaborated extensively in the creation of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. Several of his works form part of the museum’s permanent installation. He later served as director of the Dalí Theatre-Museum and as vice-president and lifetime trustee of the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation.
Today, Antoni Pitxot is regarded as one of the most original representatives of post-war Catalan surrealism. His work is particularly sought after for its unmistakable rocky imagery, technical sophistication and profound connection with Cadaqués and the Mediterranean landscape.
Artistic Inspiration
The metamorphic imagery recalls Salvador Dalí’s double images and dream landscapes, while the accumulation of fragmented bodies evokes the psychological density of Max Ernst and the sculptural imagination of Henry Moore. The theatrical arrangement of monumental figures also suggests echoes of Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical spaces, René Magritte’s visual paradoxes and Pablo Picasso’s reinvention of the human form. Yet Pitxot’s transformation of Mediterranean stones into living presences remains entirely personal and immediately recognizable.

You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.

2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.

If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:

- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item

B. You changed your mind
