Description
A powerful and highly atmospheric oil painting by Antoni Pitxot i Soler, created in 1987, during the artist’s mature period.
The composition belongs to Pitxot’s unmistakable visual universe: a mineral landscape transformed into a dense field of fragmented rocks, shells, organic forms and almost figurative presences. The image seems to emerge from the stony memory of Cadaqués and Cap de Creus, where matter becomes imagination and geology starts behaving suspiciously like theatre.
Painted with expressive, layered brushwork and a refined chromatic range of blues, greens, ochres, greys and pale mineral tones, the work has both decorative strength and intellectual depth. The forms appear unstable, poetic and metamorphic, moving between landscape, still life, abstraction and surreal vision.
This is not a conventional landscape, but a mental terrain: stones, fragments and coastal matter arranged like a private mythology. The painting captures the essence of Pitxot’s mature language, where the natural world is not simply represented, but reconstructed as a symbolic, dreamlike and almost archaeological vision.
Artist Bio
Antoni Pitxot i Soler, also known as Antoni Pichot Soler, was born in Figueres, Catalonia, in 1934 and died in 2015. He came from a family deeply connected to art, including the painter Ramon Pichot, who was associated with the Catalan modernist circle and was a friend of Pablo Picasso.
Pitxot spent part of his youth in San Sebastián, where he developed his early artistic training and began exhibiting in Spain and abroad. In 1966 he settled permanently in Cadaqués, a decisive place for his artistic identity. There, inspired by the rocks and landscapes of Cap de Creus, he created his most recognizable body of work: compositions built from stones, mineral forms and coastal fragments transformed into figures, structures and dreamlike scenes.
He was a close friend and collaborator of Salvador Dalí, playing an important role in the creation and development of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. Pitxot later became director of the museum and held important positions within the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation. A permanent room dedicated to his work can be seen at the Dalí Theatre-Museum.
In 2004 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts, one of Spain’s major cultural distinctions.
Artistic Context / Pictorial Inspiration
Pitxot’s work occupies a fascinating position between Catalan surrealism, mineral abstraction and symbolic figuration. His paintings connect naturally with the dreamlike world of Salvador Dalí, but also with the structural intensity of Paul Cézanne, the metamorphic imagination of Max Ernst and the organic abstraction of Joan Miró.
In this painting, the influence of Cadaqués and Cap de Creus is essential. The rocks do not merely describe a landscape; they become actors, ruins, fossils, masks and fragments of an inner theatre. Pitxot transforms nature into vision, and vision into matter.
