A beautifully aged antique French brass wall plaque depicting Christ Blessing with a halo, framed by an architectural burst of radiating light.

Dating from the late 19th century, this compact devotional object combines expressive religious imagery with a striking sunburst silhouette. Christ is shown in half-length relief with long curling hair, a finely detailed beard and a calm contemplative expression.

His right hand is raised in the traditional gesture of blessing or spiritual instruction. Classical robes sweep across the lower composition, introducing graceful folds and movement into the embossed surface.

A circular halo appears directly behind Christ’s head. The medallion is then surrounded by groups of elongated rays forming a radiant glory, known in French ecclesiastical design as a gloire rayonnante.

The strong sculptural outline and richly aged brass surface make this a particularly effective antique wall accent. It would introduce texture, patina and European character to a gallery wall, collected bedroom, intimate library, private chapel or layered maximalist interior.

The brass displays a distinctive combination of muted gold, deep brown oxidation and turquoise-green verdigris. These natural surface changes settle within the recessed hair, beard, drapery and spaces separating the rays, enhancing the relief and giving the plaque an individual historic appearance.

The reverse suggests that the relief was embossed or mechanically pressed from comparatively thin brass rather than cast as a heavy solid-bronze sculpture.

This method was widely suited to workshop-produced devotional objects because it created visual depth while keeping the plaque light enough for straightforward wall display.

The plaque is French and dates from approximately 1890.
