What is an antique French Savonnerie rug?

On your mission to unearth your dream antique French rug will inevitably lead you to Savonnerie knotted-pile carpets. These rugs were first manufactured in the mid-17th century in a former soap factory by Pierre DuPont. Influenced by Turkish patterns and techniques, Savonnerie rugs became highly favoured diplomatic gifts. There kudos meant that they were highly sought-after and seen as the finest of French status symbols.

Made from wool and silk, the Turkish patterns soon morphed into more classical French designs, including floral depictions, medallions, and birds. You’ll find some beautiful Savonnerie rugs in our edit.

What is an antique French Aubusson rug?

Aubusson rugs were huge in scale and stature. Taking its name from a region in central France, Aubusson rugs were produced on a small scale in family workshops on naive looms. It was only in the early 18th century that production was scaled to three more major workshops that were granted cultural heritage status by UNESCO. Each Aubusson rug is a rich tapestry reminiscent of a Renaissance painting. Mammoth in size, these make wonderful wall hangings rather than being used as rugs in the traditional sense.
