Description

This is a beautiful hand built model of the Golden Hind the most famous English ship of it's age.

Famous for being the galleon in which Sir Francis Drake encompassed the World on the first circumnavigation by an English ship. Drakes command consisted of about one hundred and eighty men in five ships with the flagship being the Pelican. The expeditions left Plymouth on December 13, 1577.

The crew sailed for the Cape Verde Islands, capturing half a dozen Spanish ships and more importantly, the Portuguese pilot, Nuno da Silva. His Santa Maria was renamed Mary and first put under the command of Thomas Doughty, one of the several gentlemen adventurers on the voyage. However the latter proved a trouble maker and Drake soon relieved him of command altogether.

Whilst moored at Puerto San Julian for one month, the crisis came to a head and the mutinous Doughty was tried and found guilty. He was executed on the spot. It was at this point that Drake delivered his celebrated sermon enjoining the gentlemen to haul and draw with the mariner and the mariner with the gentlemen .

After the execution, Drake abandoned three of the ships and set sail with the Pelican, Marigold and Elizabeth on August 17. Drake re-christened his ship to Golden Hind on August 20, after rounding the Cape of Virgins. The choice of name was political, for the Golden Hind was found on the coat of arms of Sir Christopher Hatton, one of the voyages principal bankers and a friend of the late Thomas Doughty.

After only fourteen days in the Strait, the English flag first flew in the Pacific on September 6, 1578. A serious storm cost the expedition the other two ships. Marigold was lost with twenty-nine crew, and Elizabeth turned back to England. Drake pressed on along the West Coast of Spanish America and captured the treasure ship Nuestra Sierra de la Concepcion off Cape Francisco Colombia on March 1, 1579. The cargo, which was made up of eighty pounds of gold and twenty-six tons of silver bars, was equal in value to 126,000 or equivalent to about half the English crowns revenues for one year.

Drake captured a few more ships on his return journey to England. The captured crew were almost unanimous in the respect for Drakes fairness. They were also impressed by his cartographic skills, as for everything was depicted so naturally that anyone who used these paintings as a guide could not go astray. On June 17, 1579, Golden Hind anchored at what came to be known as Drakes Bay, just North of San Francisco Bay. As he found a good country and a fruitful soil, this land was claimed for his Majesty and named New Albion . On July 25, 1579, he set sail cross the Pacific and arrived at Sierra Leone on July 22, 1580.

The first English circumnavigation of the Globe ended on September 26, 1580, when Golden Hind sailed into Plymouth after a voyage of 2 years, 10 months and 18 days with 59 of her crew aboard. Drake was finally received by Queen Elizabeth on April 4, 1581 and knighted on the decks of the Golden Hind at Deptford dock. The ship remained on public view until 1660s.

This particular model was built by Eric Butler in the 1980s and the glazed case has been handmade to show the model to it's best advantage and keep its free of dust.

The model itself is wonderfully detailed, when you look closely you can see the attention that has be lavished in its constructions. From the neatly coiled ropes on the deck to the tar caulking present between the planks on the deck there is a wealth of detail on this model. Observe, if you will the jolly boat, ready with rope and oars, able to be put to sea at any moment!

The rigging is done with historical accuracy as is the paintwork on the ship. The case has been purpose built just for this ship.

Models of this quality are not freely available on the market any more.

It took 2 years to build and all of the rigging is done by hand the the sails were also hand stitched.

Can be collected from Highbury (N5) London, or we can send via courier.

Condition report:

The ship has been cased since it was made and is in perfect condition, there is some foxing and growing to the sails as they have oxidised over the 40 years since it was built but that adds to the appearance.

The case is in good condition and the glass if free from chips and cracks. They are some light surface scuffs on the glass commensurate to it's age.

Cancellations and Returns

Last updated: 24th March 2025

We want everybody’s Vinterior experience to be seamless, so both buyers and sellers can fall in love with pre-loved. We designed our Terms of sale to treat everybody fairly.

However, sometimes things don’t go exactly to plan, and you may need to cancel or return an order.

To prevent this, we encourage you to check listings, photos and descriptions carefully before you buy. If you aren’t sure about a piece’s condition, size, provenance or shipping, just ask; click Contact seller to get in touch. Always contact your seller first if you have any queries, at any point in your purchase.

Our buyers receive the same protection when buying from all our sellers, both professional and verified.

Can I cancel an order?

There are many reasons why you might need to cancel an order, and you'll often be entitled to a refund. To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.

If you cancel your order before it has been dispatched, you will receive a full refund - including delivery costs. However, if your item has been shipped, delivery costs will not be included in your refund.

Please note: orders of bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.

Can I return an order?

We understand that sometimes a piece isn’t the perfect fit. So if you no longer want your order, our returns process will ensure it finds a new home fast.

The Vinterior Guarantee included with your purchase entitles you to 14-day returns - allowing you to return any item within 14 days of the delivery date (except in specific circumstances, detailed below).

You can return your order if...

It isn't what you expected

If what arrives isn’t what you ordered, you can open a return. Just send us some photo evidence that the listing was inaccurate, misleading or misrepresented your purchased piece, and you’ll receive a refund.

You change your mind

If you don’t feel a piece is right for your space, you can return it. Once you request a change of mind return, you’ll be responsible for shipping the piece back to your seller as soon as possible. Delivery costs are non-refundable.

It's damaged in transit

In the rare event that an item arrives damaged or defective, you have a full 30 days from the date of delivery to return it for a full refund.

If your purchase arrives broken, always let us know. If Proovia delivered the piece, we can raise an insurance claim on the seller’s behalf. Or, the seller can raise a claim with their chosen courier.

What can't I return?

Just as there are some orders you can’t cancel, there are some you cant return, too. Personalised, bespoke or made-to-order pieces are non-returnable, and non-refundable. Sellers may also reject your return if the item has been altered in any way.

Please note: pieces on our site are pre-loved, not new. They may show some wear and tear; this is not sufficient grounds for a refund, unless the seller has misrepresented the item’s condition.

Lastly, neither Vinterior nor our sellers are liable for any damages or loss sustained in transit via third parties.

I'm eligible for a return. Now what?

To initiate a return, log into your Vinterior account, then go to the relevant order page and click Create a return. In the return request, be sure to include all the details: the reason for your return, an in-depth description, and photos of any issues or damage.

How will I receive my refund?

Once the seller confirms they’ve received the item (in the same condition it was sent), we will send your refund to your original payment method.

All items are inspected on return. If the seller receives the return with damage they don’t recognise, we will not be able to process your refund and the seller may need to send the piece back to you. You will be required to cover these delivery costs.
