About Ton Furniture

One hundred sixty years of bending furniture. Ton furniture, an eco-friendly pick, combining nature, heritage, and craftsmanship. Earning a reputation across Europe and beyond for their quality, innovation, and adherence to tradition. Ton was founded by Michael Thonet, a German-Austrian cabinet maker who started in his own studio in Rhine valley in 1819. Known as the inventor of bentwood, Thonet used steam to bend wood into elegant curvatures, rounded forms, and shapes, a truly ingenious method unexplored by others before. By 1861 a bent furniture plant was born and opened production in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, in the Zlinsky Kraj region of the Czech Republic. The bending craftsmanship became his iconic signature, a cornerstone of modern furniture design, lightweight, durable and inexpensive, but it wasn't an easy task; bending wood took several trials and errors to bring it to perfection. The name TON stands for továrna ohýbaného nábytku which translates to bent furniture factory, the "genius of chairs" TON uses a manual bending technique pushing limits further with combined, unique methods from contemporary designers. The most famous and universal desired design is the Nr. 14 chair, aka the bistro chair, which required years to perfect. Consisting of a beechwood frame and woven Raffa seat, it feels perfect when you pick it up. The design was in such demand that over 80 million have been sold worldwide since its first introduction in 1859. It stood out from the crowd due to its space-saver design, consisting of a mere six pieces of wood, ten screws, and two nuts; it could be transported hassle-free stripped-down effortlessly, and assembled back together again by anyone. The modernist architect Le Corbusier said: "never was a better and more elegant design precisely crafted and practical item created." The quintessential Ton chair continues to appear in bistros, restaurants, and even on set in movies, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Citizen Kane, Toy Story 4, Poltergeist, and Cabaret La La Land. It's also captured in late 19th century paintings, in particular those by French artist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec portraying Paris' café culture. Michael Thonet chairs are as current today as they were in the 18th century and have become a favourite contemporary piece that everyone around the globe idolises and dreams of owning. The TON legacy says it all "handcrafted to last generations", linked to high quality, their lounge chairs, dining tables, and unique wood-bending techniques have remained traditional and unchanged. Each piece is sustainable, timeless in style, and synonymous with quality. Add depth and soul to the home with furniture made to last a lifetime.
