Product Details
Description
This vintage 1940s handmade wool Kilim rug is a striking example of tribal artistry, featuring a traditional square sofreh design woven in earthy beige, deep red, navy, and vibrant blue. Flatwoven using natural wool on a sturdy cotton foundation, it showcases bold geometric and zig-zag motifs framed by striped tribal borders. Compact, lightweight, and full of character, this 128 × 116 cm (4'2" × 3'9") piece works beautifully as a statement floor accent, a colourful base under a coffee table, or an expressive decorative wall hanging. Its rich colours, soft texture, and authentic folk-art presence make it a versatile addition to bohemian, rustic, eclectic, and modern interiors.
Origin & Age: Handwoven in Central Asia during the 1940s, this Kilim reflects the heritage of Qashqai tribal weaving traditions. Originally crafted as a sofreh, or food-spread textile, it embodies a long lineage of nomadic craftsmanship. Each pattern and motif carries cultural significance, representing a weaving style passed down through generations of Qashqai artisans. Its age contributes to its charm, and despite being an antique piece, it remains in excellent vintage condition with colours that have matured beautifully over time.
Style & Design Details: The rug features a warm beige central field surrounded by bold geometric shapes in navy, red, and blue, creating a visually compelling composition. Zig-zag borders frame the design, adding rhythm and movement typical of tribal flatweaves. Striped bands with small symbolic motifs appear along the top and bottom edges, reinforcing its authentic Qashqai folk-art identity. The square format enhances its versatility, making it suitable for compact rooms, layered interiors, or as a decorative textile for walls, tabletops, or entryways. Its geometric forms and naturally dyed palette allow it to blend seamlessly with bohemian, vintage, rustic, and contemporary décor styles.
Craft & Material: This Kilim is woven entirely by hand using hand-spun wool for the surface and a cotton foundation for added stability. The flatwoven construction makes it durable, lightweight, and easy to handle while preserving the soft yet strong texture characteristic of traditional wool rugs. Natural dyes provide the rich depth of the red, blue, and navy tones, each knot and motif reflecting the artisan’s skill and the cultural knowledge embedded in Qashqai weaving practices. As a one-of-a-kind handmade rug, it represents genuine craftsmanship and enduring heritage.
Care & Maintenance: To preserve the colours and condition of this vintage Kilim, vacuum gently using low suction and rotate occasionally to encourage even wear. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals. Keep the rug away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading and consider using a rug pad to keep it in place and protect its fibres. For deeper cleaning or long-term care, professional rug cleaning is recommended, especially for antique and handmade flatwoven pieces.
