White ground decorated in polychrome with gilt foliage and a central medallion featuring a bouquet of roses, framed by a garland of gilt leaves and gold bands. The decoration is bordered by two orange-ground bands, each embellished with a garland of gilt foliage. Gold bands and gilt wolf's-tooth borders decorate the body and rims.

Didier Gardillou (born in 1954) is a distinguished French ceramic artist internationally renowned for his extraordinary mastery of porcelain trompe-l'œil and porcelain flowers. For more than four decades, he has dedicated his career to pushing the technical and artistic boundaries of ceramic art, achieving a level of realism that is often described as more lifelike than nature itself. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the leading specialists in illusionistic porcelain and is considered unique in Europe for the remarkable realism of his creations.
Early Life and Training
Gifted in the visual arts from an early age, Didier Gardillou discovered his vocation during a visit to the Musée Adrien Dubouché in Limoges, one of the world's foremost museums dedicated to ceramics. This experience inspired him to pursue a career in the ceramic arts.
From 1972 to 1977, he studied at the prestigious École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs (ENAD) of Limoges, under the direction of the celebrated ceramic artist Jean-Jacques Prolongeau. During these formative years, Gardillou became both a student and close collaborator of Prolongeau, working within his workshop and participating in important public art commissions under the French "First Artistique" program. He developed a thorough mastery of ceramic techniques, including stoneware, faience, biscuit porcelain, hand-painted porcelain, and complex sculptural forms.
Recognition and Awards
In 1979, Gardillou received the First Prize awarded by the Chambre Syndicale des Céramistes and Ateliers d'Art de France at the Salon des Ateliers d'Art. The distinction recognized the exceptional quality of his work, including biscuit porcelain sculptures and enamelled porcelain pieces decorated with overglaze colors.
His growing reputation led to increasing national recognition. In 1981, he was selected to exhibit at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) in Paris as part of the exhibition "Contemporary French Ceramics: Sources and Trends", where he presented his pioneering trompe-l'œil porcelain works.
In 1982, several of his creations were acquired by the Presidency of the French Republic to be offered as official diplomatic gifts to the governments of Denmark and Spain. Among these prestigious acquisitions were his celebrated porcelain cabbage tureens and other sculptural ceramic works.
The following year, in 1983, Gardillou was awarded the Gold Medal of the Paris Fair and received the First Prize for Creativity at the Salon des Artisans d'Art for a monumental sculpture composed of nine separate elements. The same year, his work was featured in a major exhibition in Tokyo, organized in partnership with Printemps, Ateliers d'Art de France, Air France, and the Paris Chamber of Commerce, helping to establish his international reputation.
Artistic Maturity and Collaboration
During the early 1990s, his former mentor Jean-Jacques Prolongeau joined him in his own studio, where the two artists collaborated on porcelain decorative projects, particularly the creation and decoration of vases and ornamental bowls. During this period, Gardillou also maintained permanent exhibitions in Gstaad, Switzerland, attracting an international clientele of collectors and art enthusiasts.
