Description
An important and highly decorative Central European Baroque cabinet-on-chest, dating from the first decades of the 18th century and most likely produced within the cultural sphere of the Habsburg Monarchy, circa 1728.
The cabinet is constructed in two architecturally distinct sections and features a sophisticated combination of walnut veneers, contrasting maple stringing, ornamental silver inlays, and carved architectural elements.
The lower section consists of a sturdy chest with three large drawers. Their fronts are decorated with carefully arranged geometric walnut veneers, framed by fine contrasting maple stringing and centered by elaborate ornamental cartouches inlaid with silver. Small turned wooden handles complement the design without detracting from the richness of the veneered surfaces.
The façade is framed by prominent, spirally turned Solomonic columns, a characteristic Baroque architectural motif that is repeated in the upper section and gives the entire structure a particularly monumental appearance.
The upper cabinet, which is narrower than the chest below and slightly raised above its top, has two doors, each decorated with geometric walnut veneer and a large central ornamental motif inlaid with silver, similar to those found on the drawers.
Behind the doors, the cabinet features two internal shelves, providing useful storage while maintaining the formal appearance of the exterior.
The upper section culminates in an imposing architectural cornice with a central triangular pediment, further reinforcing the cabinet's strong architectural design and its connection to the aristocratic decorative style of early 18th-century Central Europe.
Of particular historical interest, the back of the cabinet bears an old inscription:
“1728 – FERENC GIULAY”
accompanied by an indistinct mark or emblem, possibly of a heraldic nature, whose precise identification remains the subject of further research.
The name and date are particularly intriguing in connection with Count Ferenc Gyulay, also known as Franz von Gyulay (1674–1728), a Hungarian nobleman and high-ranking officer in the service of the Habsburg Empire during the reign of Emperor Charles VI.
The connection between the historical name, the year 1728, and the cultural context of the cabinet offers a promising avenue for further provenance research. However, in the absence of documentary evidence directly linking the cabinet to Count Gyulay, this should currently be regarded as a possible historical connection rather than a confirmed attribution of ownership.
The cabinet was purchased in 1985 from an antique and secondhand dealer in Villach, Austria, and has been part of the A&MYART Collection ever since.
Its Austrian origin, imposing architectural design, refined veneer, and unusual decorative inlays make it a particularly compelling example of the sophisticated furniture produced for the interiors of affluent Central European homes during the Habsburg period.
Today, beyond its historical and collectible value, the cabinet has an exceptional decorative presence. It can serve as a statement piece in a library, entryway, dining room, living room, or prominent contemporary interior, where its architectural silhouette, warm walnut tones, and contrasting silver accents allow it to function almost as a work of decorative art.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.
To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item
This applies to all purchases.
B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
