Lounge Chairs

Charles Eames Lounge Chairs

The Eames Chair original design and ottoman, often dubbed by collectors as 670 and 671, have endured the test of time, by remaing a go-to choice for Modern Design aficionados. Created by Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company, these statement picks were launched in 1956 following years of development. Appearing on NBB television in 1956, the couple led viewers through a compelling presentation with staged dimmed lights and veiled curtains to reveal their latest creation, the Eames Lounge chair, and Ottoman silhouette. Complete with music, the theatrical performance saw Charles give an explanation, highlighting its feature and how the model was built, complete with a speeded-up video. The reveal was dramatic. The chair was their first for the premium market. Until the 1990s, the shells were made up of thin layers of molded plywood, covered by a veneer of Brazilian rosewood and leather; his vision was to fulfil his own infatuation to create an exemplary proportioned chair that would embrace a mix of ergonomic comfort and craftsman quality. Today examples of these furnishings can be found at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The duo took us by storm again, with La Chaise, designed for a competition at the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1950, they released the famed fibreglass chairs, the armchair version. With no end to their practical designs from their Eames office, they followed with the Eames swivel chair, side chair, and iconic wire chairs a year later, winning prizes for 'organic design.'

Why choose an original Eames Chair?Eames is undoubtedly one of the brands that defined the mid-century furniture movement.

As a married couple, Charles and Ray managed to leave their mark on powerful industries like architecture, industrial and graphic design, all while creating some of the century's most beautiful and recognisable furniture items. They quickly became figureheads of America's mid-century modern design movement and continue to grow in popularity today, being heralded for their innovation and thoughtful use of new materials.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Charles and Ray created endless beloved furniture designs, including storage, seating, and tables. Still, arguably their most iconic addition to the world of furniture was the Eames Lounge Chair of 1956. Inspired by the traditional English Club Chair, the chair uses modern aspects to create a look that is at once sleek and homely. Since its debut on the Arlene Francis in the 50s, the design has made its way both into public consciousness and pop culture, featured on television shows such as Frasier and House.

It's a real piece of history, which you can own in your home.

Today, the company continues to build on the hard work of Charles and Ray. This philosophy is as consistent with making wholly new furniture items as it is with restoring and distributing classics, which is why you'll also find more unique items from brands like Eames in the Vinterior collection.
