Hans J Wegner Pioneering Modern Danish Designs

Are you seeking a Wishbone chair?

Apart from being chic, snug, and made from woven paper cord, they are endurable and unbelievably last around 50 years!

In 1950 Hans J Wegner, well known for his lounge chairs and a love of natural materials, debuted the Wishbone chair created for Carl Hanson & Son. A timeless piece still in style today thanks to its classic design, elegant curves, and minimalistic stand-alone style.

Wegner was trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured. Having studied under Kaare Klint, he helped shape the future of Danish furniture as a furniture designer and educator. He later took over Klint's professorship at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Wegner has created almost 500 chairs during his career, from accent rocking chairs with sultry curved arms and graceful lines to the anthropomorphic Papa Bear Chair.

To this day, many of them remain masterpieces.

Luckily, today's original Carl Hansen & Søn wishbone chair doesn't break the bank costing from around $800. So if you're a rocking chair daydreamer or a fan of the comfy Y-shaped back, here are several modestly priced options to draw inspiration from.

About Hans J. WegnerDesign classics developed to last; the Hans Wegner chair lines are still much sought-after pieces, retaining their value even after 70 years of their first production.

Pioneering furniture designer of the twentieth century Hans J Wegner helped define today's modern Danish design during the 50s.

He was famous for his appreciation of natural materials and innate understanding of furniture functionality and elegance; he gave sharp edges a sculptured and rounded aesthetic. In a statement, the grandfather of the chair said, "if only you could design just one good chair in your life, but you simply cannot."

During his career, he crafted over 500 Wegner Wishbone Chairs, the Wegner Wing Chair, and the Wegner CH07 Shell Chair series. But, let's not forget those pop your feet up rocking chairs too. Many have gained international recognition and awards.

Wegner, the son of a cobbler, born in Tondern, southern Denmark, learned woodworking as a young boy. At 17, he finished his cabinetmaker apprenticeship before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts in 1936, where he studied design. Wegner's background as a cabinetmaker allowed him to integrate exacting joinery techniques, using traditional approaches, finger joints, mortise, and tenons. He joined Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller to design furniture and interior parts for the town hall they were creating in Aarhus, Denmark.

Longing to open a workshop in 1943, he established his own design studio, where he began his lightweight sculpted masterpieces. His vision was greatly influenced by the Second World War, a time of scarcity due to a post-war increase in household construction & the elevated cost of materials, which pressured furniture designers to become innovative with limited available resources.

Creating elegant furniture with sophisticated, functional details was the prime message behind his creations.

The Hans Scandi line of lounge chairs, dining tables, and coffee tables embrace blonde wood finishes, classic curves, and clean lines, creating inviting and intriguing spaces.
