Second Hand September Spotlight: With Nothing Underneath
Womenswear brand With Nothing Underneath has upholstered a mahogany settee with sustainable TENCEL™ Lyocell in their signature stripe. For Second Hand September, this one-of-one piece bridges British heritage with contemporary intention and enduring craftsmanship.
A small mahogany settee with delicate cabriole legs. 19th-century British craftsmanship. Ornate details that suggest elegance without demanding it.
For Pip Durell, founder of With Nothing Underneath, this piece was an immediate choice. "If you step into any of our WNU stores, you will see dark wood everywhere. I love the richness and heritage that vintage furniture brings to a space. It adds this level of elegance in a subtle way," she explains.
For our Sit Differently campaign, Pip chose to upholster it with With Nothing Underneath's signature striped TENCEL™ Lyocell. A playful twist on the classic stripe, it contrasts beautifully with the dark wooden frame. The sustainable fabric is derived from natural wood pulp, fully biodegradable and compostable.
The result bridges two design worlds: British heritage and contemporary sustainability in a single cohesive piece.
With Nothing Underneath was founded on one principle: intention. Every piece should earn its place in your home.
"I have always been drawn to vintage furniture and jewellery. You will often find my husband and I at Kempton Antiques fair shopping for my home or any of our stores," Pip reflects. "There are great hidden pieces and I love that they hold so many stories. They withstand the test of time due to their beautiful craftsmanship and serve as a great reminder that practical, day-to-day objects shouldn't lack artistry."
For Pip, this settee embodies that philosophy perfectly. "Buying better, not more is about intention. It is one of the core foundations that the WNU brand was started on. Every piece I own should earn its place, something I still want in ten years. A well-made piece should last for generations."
When the future owner unwraps this settee, Pip hopes they'll feel one simple thing: "Like it was always meant to be there, in their home."
This is what quiet elegance means. Not loudness. Not novelty. Just a piece you reach for, live with, and pass on because it's become part of how you live.
