Home tour: Illustrator Emma Block’s colourful London home.
Emma Block’s much loved illustration is known for its wonderful gentle yet vibrant colour palettes and celebration of print and pattern. It’s not surprising that Emma’s new London home also reflects her eye for print and pattern. Set against a calming soft grey are joyful bursts of coral, dusty pink and sea green. There are also many references to Emma’s travels through South America, found in vivid woven rugs and other textile accessories. Enjoy this tour with Emma through her lovely home and find inspiration in all corners!
What were the inspirations for the decoration in your home?
Before moving into my flat I looked at Instagram and Pinterest a lot and saved things that I was drawn to, then looked at the boards and noticed what these images had in common. I noticed that I was drawn to dark walls, and spaces with lots of plants and bookshelves.
What kind of furniture are you drawn to?
I’m really drawn to mid century modern furniture. I love chic and stylish pieces that are also good quality and affordable.
Which designers/artists/figures inspire you in your daily life?
I am really inspired by people like Iris Apfel and Diana Vreeland. There is so much creativity and joy in the way they dressed themselves and their homes. I also love how Sonia Delaunay applied her artistic vision to fashion and home wear as well.
How would you sum up your home style in three words?
Eclectic, calm, and personal.
What is your dream piece of furniture?
I would love to own an Ercol dining set one day.
How would your friends describe your home?
Spacious (for London!) with a wow factor.
Favourite design element?
I love making a room special with design accessories; framed artwork, cushions and lighting.
Best advice on designing a remarkable space?
Don’t be afraid to go with your instincts and break some design rules. I like to describe my bedroom as mid century modern meets gothic Victorian. It works for me.
Do you have a favourite piece that follows you wherever you move?
A 1920s green scallop shell chair. It’s such a beautiful piece and it’s been passed around through the family. Despite being almost 100 years old it’s still in great shape.
How do you approach choosing furniture for a room?
Measure carefully and buy pieces that will stand the test of time.
Proudest DIY moment?
Painting a 1920s armchair. It sounds like a disaster on paper but it actually worked really well.
What are you currently looking for?
I would love a couple of Bentwood cafe chairs.
What is the first thing you notice when walking into a new interior space?
The light.
Biggest indulgence?
I’m always buying books and fresh flowers. Also my coffee habit!
Best bargain find?
A giant gold handpainted fan for £12 in a vintage shop.
Favourite places to go in London with friends?
I love living in East London. I often meet up with friends for brunch in Hackney or Stoke Newington. My favourite shopping street is Marylebone High Street.
