Odd Ones In: Dining Room Chairs & Tables You Can Mix and Match
Dining rooms play such an important role at this time of year with Christmas holidays around the corner. Often the dining table becomes the focus of the holidays with festive lunches and lengthly dinners into the small hours. Creating a warm, welcoming look is easy when you combine comfortable chairs with well-made tables. We’ve edited a selection of dining ideas, along with chairs and tables in our Vinterior collection below.
Mid-century inspired pieces are often more affordable than collector editions. Take for example the wire tub chairs above which work elegantly against the custom farm table in this property. While it’s rare to find complete sets, you can also mix and match your favourite finds to create a contemporary feel. We love how the colourful Persian rugs add an accent of colour to the space.
Set the scene: Currently on Vinterior, this iconic Antelope chair was the result of Ernest Race’s commission to produce public seating for the 1951 Festival Of Britain. Its simple steel rod and bent ply construction was a response to materials shortages in post-war Britain, while its playful design reflects both classic Victorian styling and the futuristic molecular and atomic imagery of the Festival itself. Race’s creation went on to win a Silver Medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale. This is a lovely example of a rare find that has been refurbished for the modern day. Custom-made dining tables can take many weeks, or even months to build. However, many studios are catching on to the fact that a solid, modern country aesthetic is rather fashionable and that a reclaimed pine top oozes character and a rustic patina. Find this beauty, along with larger sizes seating up to ten people, on Vinterior.
Antique sets often scare younger customers who are reminded of more formal dining experiences growing up. Yet when combined with contemporary accents like this simple blue and white striped rug and modern lighting, the effect is more bohemian than old fashioned. Best of all, these pieces are often better made than newly bought sets and withstand the test of time due to the types of wood used and expert craftsmanship.
Set the scene: this fabulous vintage dining set comprises a circular dining table and the matching set of six side chairs made from burr walnut with exquisite marquetry decoration. The burr walnut has a beautiful grain and it has been expertly French polished. The table top has exquisite marquetry decorations which have been hand cut from various veneers and inlaid into the table. Add in this beautiful hand spun wool rug, designed in Antwerp and weaved by foot loom in Guatemala is a great addition to an antique dining set. Finish the look with this Italian mid-century Sputnik lighting piece.
Smaller homes require thoughtfully chosen pieces for dining as you often have to contend with limited space and corner layouts. However, this is where your curated buys can really flourish as seen here with two 1950s original Wishbone chairs by Hans J Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn. Invest in original, designer collector pieces and they will always retain their value and age gracefully. If you only need a couple of chairs, why not invest in the very best?
Set the scene: original Wishbone chair, designed by Hans Wegner, manufactured by Carl Hansen in oak. This mid-century Danish style teak flip-top dining table converts into a poker or cards table. The top simply lifts and flips to an original lime green felt table top. Ideal for smaller spaces and games enthusiasts. It also has four near concealed drawers and removable legs for easy navigating in small spaces. Finally, a classic rattan bench by Normal Wilkinson adds extra seating and can be used as a hallway addition when not in use.
