J. Lyons & Co opened their first tea shop in Piccadilly, London in 1894 and it was a huge success. In 1909 the brand expanded into more teashops, restaurants and hotels. From the 1930s Lyons began to develop a "pioneering" range of teas, biscuits and cakes that were sold in grocery stores across the world. It's highly likely that this sign was produced to promote the special tea blend the company retailed and, being the earliest variant of the company's logo is likely to date from the 1930s/40s.

This 'pot-bellied'/convex shape is more unusual and adds a quite literal extra-dimension to the piece. The quality of the enamel is excellent, the colours bright and the typography bold.

Condition is reasonable, there are some areas of enamel loss - most notably to the 'O' of Lyons', and above the 'T' and 'E' of tea. There are some other small areas of chipping but otherwise the enamel retains a good gloss.

The sign measures 75cm wide, 49.5cm high and is around 3cm deep
