This Japanese artwork depicts two carp (koi), one black, one red, swimming upstream. The black and red fish form the two sides of the yin yang symbol. China is the ancestral home of carp art and from where traditional Japanese carp art draws much of its inspiration. /To the Chinese people, the carp is a symbol of perseverance, strength, and endurance. The carp can be found in many kinds of Chinese artwork, including scroll paintings, ink paintings, ceramics, and more. However, Japan is the one country from where koi art has spread around the world. In Japan, the carp represents good luck and good fortune. This artwork in good vintage condition commensurate with age. Newly framed and glazed. Artist's signature symbol appears in lower left hand corner.
