A large original oil on board by Alfred Daniels RBA. Entitled "Burton's Station Garage", it captures an early 1950s scene of British activity at Burton's Station Garage in London's Crouch End. The station in question is, of course, Crouch End.

At 36" x 20" this is one of Alfred Daniels' larger oil paintings of the period. Though unsigned it has been authenticated by the artist, who sold it to the GLC in 1953. It retains the original plaque with the artist's name and the title.
According to the Royal Society of British Artists:
"Alfred Daniels was born in London's East End in 1924. In the late 1940's he studied at the Royal College of Art, London. An example of his early painting rightly compared to the work of the great American artist Ben Shahn, was included in a recent survey of 1950's British paintings at London's Barbican Centre."

The award-winning set of murals he completed for Hammersmith Town Hall in 1954, depicting life on the Thames, is regarded as a modern classic. Around the same time the Football Association held a fine art competition whose judges included the directors of the National Gallery and the Tate; the first prize was won jointly by Alfred Daniels and L. S. Lowry.

This early work depicts various aspects of 1950s British life. Painted with a nuanced palette and highly inventive and various use of brushstrokes, the figures are both dignified and comic. Burton's Station Garage is no longer in existence. A 1960s archive photo of the location is shown below.

It has been professionally cleaned and framed in a high quality oak frame with canvas mount. It is in excellent condition.
