A 19th century Qing Dynasty porcelain vase of baluster form, with blue and white glazes, the surface with foliate decoration and having cartouches displaying chrysanthemum blossoms and birds in flight. Having character marks to the underside.
While the white elements on this vase reflect the colour of the clay used to fabricate it, the blue is achieved through the application of cobalt oxide which has been applied by hand and then fired at high temperatures. The evolution of Chinese blue and white porcelain culminates in Chinese Export wares, produced for the Western Market and taste, before the Frenchman Francois Xavier d'Entrecolles finally discovered the secret of Chinese porcelain manufacturing.
With restorations to the neck.
