Description
Pair of antique candlestick table lamps from the Aesthetic Movement period, in iron & brass, 1890`s ca, English.
This pair of antique lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has the following new components: lamp holder with a cream card cover, gold silk cable, black cord switch, black plug (UK Plug up to 250V) & clip on silk lampshade. Lightbulbs included. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.
Presented here is a pair of antique Aesthetic Movement English candlesticks converted into lamps.
The Aesthetic Movement style flourished in Britain between 1860-1900. The sophisticated design was intended to bring beauty to everyday objects, escaping the ugliness & materialism of the Industrial Age. Aesthetic artists drew inspiration from various cultures and periods, in this example from ancient Greece, with the geometric decorative pattern on the brass. The contrast between the black & gold surfaces, tubular & square shapes, traditional & geometric motifs, make these lamps a good example of The Aesthetic Movement style. This rich eclecticism is one of the Aesthetic Movement`s most intriguing characteristics making these lamps fitting for Interiors today.
With their slender classical form & elegant proportions these lamps are well sized for the bedside, mantelpiece, shelf or corridor. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Arts & Crafts, Traditional, Hollywood Regency or Contemporary.
The eclectic design consists of a tubular column of polished brass with a geometric Greek key decoration. The column leads to the ornate square drip pan & sconce in patinated iron. This is followed by a new lamp holder covered by a new cream card candle tube.
Looking towards the bottom, the base is also square and in patinated iron, with a scalloped & stepped edge and four feet. A band of foliate creates movement & texture. The casting of these bands is superb. Both lamps are stamped on the underside: " R.N. 55656", the manufacturer`s registered model number.
Each lamp is finished with a new clip-on black silk lampshade lined metallic gold. This complements the tones of the base.
Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present fitted & photographed with new LED 4.5 Watt dimmable Candle Clear shaped lightbulbs (equivalent of 40 Watts), which are included in the price.
Fitted with a twisted antique gold tone silk covered cord, these lamps retain a period appropriate aesthetic while ensuring safe, modern electrification.
These antique lamps are in very good condition for their age. The original antique patina has been preserved, adding character & depth. The metal frames are sound with no missing or broken parts, and only tiny superficial marks and minor rubbing to the black surfaces in line with age & wear. The 2 lampshades are new and in very good condition.
Additional dimensions:
The total Height with the shades on is: 37.5 cm.
The base alone (without the lampshades) is: Height: 28.5 cm, Width: 9 cm, Depth: 9 cm.

AESTHETIC MOVEMENT HISTORY
The Aesthetic Movement in Britain covered the period of 1860 to 1900. Artists designed to escape the Industrial Revolution Age, by concentrating instead on producing art that was beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning: `Art for Art`s sake`. These new bohemian Aesthetic artists included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Christopher Dresser & Frederic Leighton.
The Aesthetic Movement initiated extensive artistic & design changes. Its eclecticism, modern concepts of middle-class lifestyle and domestic environment prepared the way for the art movements of the 20th Century, resonating even into our own time.
