About this item

Amazing, oversized Art Deco Uplighters from Weimar Berlin.

These huge, beautiful lamps are by repute from the Adlon Hotel, at the heart of interwar Germany's bohemian culture (This is where Christopher Isherwood wrote his Berlin novels, inspiring the film Cabaret). They do seem like they would have been at home there, David Lynch used a similar pair to illustrate the Deco opulence of Twin Peaks Red Room and you can certainly picture them either side of Sally Bowles, strutting the stage in her bowler and fishnets.

Most likely bespoke, they have the most unusual finish, with gilt over acid washed bronze. The texture and colour of the enormous tulip shades changes colour and texture as your eyes move over them. One shade has a smoother finish than the other, which is more pitted in places, but the same technique has been applied to both. There are residues of polish in parts of the more pitted shade, leaving a hazed look when viewed from some angles (and becoming invisible again when viewed from a different angle).

The same finish has been applied to the bases, which have some losses to the gilt and signs of patination to the exposed bronze. To the underside, the bases have cast iron inserts, in perfect clean condition. The stems are electroplated and have some losses and small scratches to the gold though generally a very good coverage, around 95% intact.

The original switches were missing, so we have had new, bespoke brass fittings engineered for them in the same deco style. They have then been rewired to exacting standards, with new cable grommets and sleeves throughout.

The tulip shades are around 40cm square, the base a bit narrower, and the whole is around 184cm tall. These really are standout pieces, they are so large, beautiful and unique they take everyone aback who sees them and are going to look amazing in the right location.

Price is for the pair, we are selling them together only.
