About this item

Nice little polychrome monoxyle bread stamp displaying a Fine work of marquetry with small inlays of colored wooden triangles, delicate engraved decorations and a carved flower on the bottom part.

Bread and butter were the basics of French folks all along the 18th-19th century, especially the peasantry. In the mountains area, the very harsh climate during the winter periods and the difficulty to find firewoods had the villagers organizing a bread cooking fete once or twice a year. These events could last more than a week, all the peasants would gather to make bread altogether, enough so they could store it afterwards and it would last for the whole season.
Just before placing the bread into the furnace, everyone would mark its bread with a special stamp so they could recognize it once cooked and take it home.
