About this item

The French art of handicrafts presented us until, circa 1850 with many admirable, valuable and singular wooden carved nutcrackers. The abundance of nuts in this country drew the imagination and the demand towards nutcrackers. French carvers differ by splendid works of high quality, carefully arranged in the detail. Turned on the lathe and carved, this nutcracker is carved as a grotesque figure of a man s head with merry face on one side and another face with a wide opened mouth with a screw on the other side to crack the walnuts.
Walnut tree wood, France, 19th century.
