A Late 18th Century Qing Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Jar

A Late 18th century blue and white glazed porcelain jar of bulbous form, decorated throughout with stylised chrysanthemums and foliage.

The stylised chrysanthemums on this delicately painted blue and white jar symbolise the ninth moon as well as the virtue of withstanding hardship and suffering. This interpretation is due to the flower blooming in autumn, bringing with it the anticipation of winter. Along with the orchid, the plum and bamboo, it forms part of the ‘Four Gentlemen’.

Due to its health promoting properties, the chrysanthemum is a symbol of longevity. To this day, the Chinese drink chrysanthemum tea for its supposed healthy properties.
