About this item

A French beer or water jug with naturalist decoration of barley and hops. The model for this jug was created in 1897.
Jules Brateau (1844-1923) was a silversmith of exceptional talent, and began his career working in gold for the more important Parisian jewellers. He was awarded a gold medal in the Universal Exhibition of 1889, and was in large part responsible for the renewed popularity of pewter. His work can be found in the best decorative arts museums.
It is in excellent condition and retains its original patina, and is fully marked.
