The rose being the focal point of the engraving is not a coincidence, nor is it a merely an artistic consideration. Having shared a monarch with Scotland since 1606 when James VI of Scotland became James I of England following the inheritance of the crown from Elizabeth I the 1707 act of union was a union of parliaments. James I, himself was an advocate of closing the Scottish parliament. In 1801 when Ireland became part of Great Britain this too was an extension to the Union that existed as yet again we shared a monarch. The Union was seen as being England and Wales centric and still is to this day by some.
