Eric Knowles Comments
BernardoPerroto was an Altare glassmaker who relocated to Orleans France
In 1671 he successfully petitioned the Duc d'Orleans for a monopoly in glassmaking. This meant that he was the only glassmaker allowed to operate on the banks of the Loire. In the same year he purchased a retail outlet in Orleans.
Now as Bernard Perrot he was recognised as a 'gentilhomme verrier' or gentleman glassmaker and although he died childless in 1709 members of the family continued in the glassmaking trade for about the next fifty years.
This particular bottle would have been for perfume or holy oil and possibly snuff. The Fleur de Lys is the symbol of the House of Bourbon who ruled France from 1589 to 1848 with the exception the period between the French Revolution of 1789 and the first downfall of Napoleon in 1814 and his second after his '100 day reign in 1815 that ended at Waterloo.
