About this item

This particularly large, enamel sign advertising Brooke Bond Tea is in remarkably good condition. The sign was produced by the Patent Enamel Co. of Birmingham, a company that, in 1889, built the first factory specifically devoted to enamelled iron sign making. This particular sign is likely to date from the 1920s/30s and has the liberal, quality use of materials typically found with early enamel signs. It is far less typical to find an early sign in such good condition, the orange background is both even and vibrant the main area of the sign has virtually no enamel loss, just a few light surface scratches that are impossible to show in a photograph. The patterned edge is in very good condition with very minor enamel loss on the outer edge but still virtually no corrosion. The remarkable condition of this sign is indicative of a lifetime spent in doors, which again is unusual for such a large example. Although the font and stylings of this sign are basic, the colour is bright, the design crisp and the scale impressive and it makes for an excellent wall filler.
Being an English made sign it's measurements make the most sense in imperial - 60" wide, 40" high - this converts to 152.5cm wide and 101.5cm high, it's approximately 2mm thick.

H: 101.5cm (39.96in)
