About this item

This Mobiloil enamel sign is a particularly large, particularly early example. This variant, with the Gargoyle, ran between 1911 and 1931 and was the company's first widely used trademark. This particular sign is French and the lower strap line loosely translates as an invitation to view the Mobiloil's lubrication board/chart.
Signs of this size are rare, particularly in such early examples - the large amount of metal used meant they were often scrapped during the war effort and those that survived that were often re-purposed + used as sheet metal.
This one does bear some battle scars - most likely the result of air rifle pellets, however it is still in better condition than many early examples I've seen. There are a number of areas of enamel loss and some damage to the corners, there's also areas of scratching and slight discolouration to the 'M' 'o' and 'b' of Mobiloil. Aside from this, the red of the Gargoyle remains rich and bright, the writing is all clear and readable and the majority of the screw holes are structurally sound allowing the sign to be hung with ease.
This sign is large - it's 1 meter high, 1.75 meters wide and around 3mm thick. As with most early enamel signs it's also very high quality with a heavy base metal and thick enamel coating, subsequently it's also a decent weight.
