About this item

This kind of carriage allowed the washerwoman to stand on her knees in front of the river, without wetting her dress.
The carriage is also a protective for the knees because the laundress was on her knees during laundry. To do this, the bottom of the carriages was lined with pieces of rags or fabrics, to make the posture less painful.
Few are decorated carriages because their very utilitarian aspect did not require it.
This one is hand carved, about an hold man writing on a wall, and with "M" & "L"
From France, Walnuts, 19th century.
