While based on traditions over a thousand years old, the term was coined in the Meiji period of the Imperial Japan, to distinguish such works from Western-style paintings) Robert H. Crowder studied with Nihonga master Mochizuki Shunko. He was imprisoned during World War II. Upon his release, he returned to America. He settled in Hollywood where his murals decorated the sets of multiple motion pictures and television shows. In the early 1950’s he founded the wallcovering company that bears his name to this day. Artist, horticulturalist, poet, linguist, and musician, Robert Crowder’s century was devoted to expressions of emotion through art. He published a book titled "The Blue Furoshiki"
Robert Crowder’s Japanese name: Shoji Kuroda.
