About this item

Rare, beautiful, mid-century umbrella stand made of metal and brass and stands on tripod legs, with brass ball tips
and antique-gold colored, 'Scoubidou' straps, circa 1950s-1960s, in France.

While the body itself looks like it could be an upside-down umbrella, its design is both playful and unique, with the straps
interwoven on all sides, giving the overall piece a space-age, "rocket"effect, a reflection of the mindset of that epoch.

At the top, it has a "3-pointed star" divider, designed to create individual compartments,
to easily separate umbrellas, canes, etc.

Six, small brass balls surround the edges of the top of the "basket", which narrows all the way down to the base,
where there's a removable round "plate" or tray, making it easy to clean water droplets.
Another, larger brass ball finishes the tip of the handle.

The decorative straps, in French, are called Scoubidou", aka "lanyard." Use of the Scoubidou, originated as knotting craft made with plastic "thread"
for children in France, that became a fad in late 1950's and is still popular today. It was named after a song by the same name, sung by French singer and actor,
Alexandre 'Sacha' Distel.

Due to its level of elasticity, this flat material has been stretched with sections of straps bound together, by threading and knotting, as is seen here.

The piece is in wonderful, original condition, with minor signs of wear and use consistent for its age, on the body, feet and legs, which only add
to its charm (see photos.)

Its design has clean lines and the structure itself ,is both stable and lightweight, making it easy to place nearly anywhere.
It has been gently cleaned with respect to maintaining the original patina on the body and straps.

A great, retro, piece of decor, that's perfect for any given MCM space.

Colors: Cream/White, Brass, Antique Gold.
