About this item

The Compagnons du Tour de France is a French organization of craftsmen and artisans dating from the Middle Ages. Their traditional, technical education includes taking a tour, the Tour de France, around France and doing apprenticeships with various masters. Tour de France simply refers to the fact that they are working in different places in France; every six months to a year they are required to change work locations. The word compagnon (companion) is derived from the Old French compagnon, a person with whom one breaks bread.

Inseparable from the masterly hand and the trade itself, the spirit of the guild system is expressed through values, the determination to do even better, customs, symbols, rituals and legends - everything the compagnon refers to as "duty'

The word "guild" connotes a number of associations and movements. Each guild member (compagnon) belongs to a job specific association: carpenters, joiners, locksmith, cobblers, coppersmith, painters....

To become a compagnon, one has to earn the title along with the recognition of one s peers. This presupposes demonstrable competence within particular trade. A candidate must therefore prove himself by creating a "masterpiece", an example of his best work.

This masterpiece consists of a hipped pavilion roof. It combines various difficulties with regard to planning and assembly. It is made from walnut tree.
