Edward III was king of England and Lord of Ireland from January 1327 . His military success restored royal authority after the disastrous reign of his father, Edward II. His eldest son, Edward Duke of Cornwall became known as the Black Prince and was famous for his chivalry and bravery on and off the battlefield.
Coins were hammered in Durham from 1080 to 1539. The "mint" was used as a 'Royal Mint" but was for the most part controlled by the Bishops of Durham who woud put their own family crests on coinage. The minting of money was a profitable business for the clerg
