About this item

Unique heather carved pipe with bone details, featuring grotesque characters and fantasy animals. The middle part shows a beautiful work of turned wood in a single piece, hollowed out to show the bone central piece. At the top, the mouthpart is separated by a ring made of bone carved in the shape of tree leaves. The bottom part is really interesting as it features a variety of characters depending the angle you re looking at: very expressive grotesques of a man and his wife, a miller, a king, a couple of monkeys, an hippopotamus, some birds all of them glass-eyed. The firebox is closed by a tiny lid attached by a metallic chain.
The contrast between the upper and the lower part is really catching the eye: while one can easily understand the complexity of the work at first sight for the main part, a close attention to the details of the bottom is needed to appreciate the exquisite intricacy of this unique object.
