Dated 28th March 1812, this letter is offering Joseph Bloomfield the rank of Brigadier General in the US Army. Written by William Eustis, Secretary of War, it conveys the wishes of the President James Madison and of the Senate for the appointment to be offered. At the bottom of the letter is Bloomfield's hand written acceptance, albeit illegible in parts.
Joseph Bloomfield was Governor of New Jersey from 1801-1802 and 1803-1812 before becoming a commissioned officer in the US Army.
