About this item

This is a lovely antique Victorian ebonised inkstand with cut brass mounts, two inset tigers eye cabochon cut crystal and a cut glass inkwell, Circa 1890 in date.

The inscription on the brass plaque reads:

"As a mark of my reverence for his exemplary virtues & my admiration of his sublime & hallowed eloquence, your affectionate friend Sir William Osler
To Sir Charles Wakefield-Bethlem Royal Hospital"

Charles Cheers Wakefield, 1st Viscount Wakefield, GCVO, CBE (1859 -1941), was an English businessman who founded the Castrol lubricants company, was lord mayor of London and was a significant philanthropist.

Sir William Osler, 1st Baronet, FRS, FRCP ( 1849 - 1919) was a Canadian physician and one of the four founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Osler created the first residency program for specialty training of physicians, and he was the first to bring medical students out of the lecture hall for bedside clinical training. He has frequently been described as the "Father of Modern Medicine". Osler was a person of many interests, who in addition to being a physician, was a bibliophile, historian, author, and renowned practical joker.
Osler spent time at Bethlem Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in London that still exists today. Hence the use of Tigers Eye, which some people believe to help those suffering with mental disease.

It also bears the paper label on the underside of the renowned Edinburgh silver smith William Crouch & Son, and retailed from their showroom in Regent Street, London.
