About this item

An exceptional very large Devonshire pine table from a South Hams farmhouse with interesting provenance. Never been offered for sale before, this 3 metre long table is available to buy for the first time. In utterly original and honest condition it has huge amounts of character and a real simple rustic charm.
Thick plank top on four slightly tapered legs united by deep aprons, one side with 4 drawers, some with original knobs. The original black finish is evident throughout and in places it's taken on an amazing weathered patina. Plenty of age and use related wear all over.
Its large proportions and complete originality make it the perfect statement dining or kitchen table. It is offered with a matching trestle ended bench of similar length that has always been with the table.
English, Devonshire, c1800

When 15,000 American troops arrived along the South Hams coast for training to prepare for D-Day, the soldiers were billeted in the many houses and cottages in the surrounding villages. Some of the larger properties were used by the officers as operations bases and mess halls. The farmhouse in which this table lived was one of these buildings. We have discovered a memoir from the son of the owner of the house during this time which recalls that when they evacuated to make room for the US troops, they took all their furniture "except the 10 foot table". Later in the document, the memoir recalls how in the 1980s an American veteran turned up at the farmhouse with his wife as he wanted to show her the table at which he had eaten his meals and spent lots of his time. We find this personal history fascinating - the table obviously held a special place in the soldier's hearts. It's a fantastic talking point. More details available to the purchaser.
