About this item

David Joel Dining Table and Four Chairs

A rare modernist dining set made by David Joel Limited circa late 1930s/early 1940s. Betty and David Joel were pre-eminent UK designers and makers during the inter war years. Their furniture addressed modernity with the traditional quality of execution derived through the Arts and Crafts Movement producing fine, practical furniture using exotic timbers and veneers from around the Commonwealth. She a diplomat's daughter raised in the far east and he the dashing naval Commander, their affluent clientele included film stars, industry and royalty. With showrooms in Sloane Street and Knightsbridge commissions came from the social and corporate elite with work for The Savoy, Lord Mountbatten and the then Duchess of York.

With the breakdown of their marriage in 1937, Betty retired from the design business and did not work again. David Joel continued the business from the company's architect designed factory in Kingston. Her bespoke pieces survive at the V & A and Geffrye Museum.

This set, bridging two favourite design eras, combines Art Deco with Modern Movement styling. It comprises four chairs (including one carver) and a lozenge shaped, Australian Black Walnut veneered table with detachable legs. These will be removed for transportation and are easily refitted by means of butterfly bolts - ideal for a space with limited access. In great vintage condition throughout, the chairs have been very recently professionally reupholstered. For fans of Soho House/Soho Home they are very similar to the Kettners Townhouse style. Or, as an example for anyone wishing to recover them, the new 'Molina' chair in William Morris print as seen here :

Dimensions: Table 168 cm long x 92cm wide at centre x 89cm at each end.
Chair Back Height 82cm

A matching Joel sideboard is available under separate listing.
