About this item

This delightful console table with a decorative 'cracked ice' lattice shelf originates from Shanxi province, northern China, circa 1880.

It will have been made as a writing desk with the shelf intended as a foot rest and three useful drawers for stationery, papers and documents. Its original black lacquer has worn over time with the paler wood beneath showing through in parts enhancing the charm of this wonderful piece of furniture.

Further open carvings to the front and sides of the table are in the form of stylised dragons with additional carvings on the feet featuring a square, scroll design - all of which are common designs in Qing dynasty furniture.

Ideal today as an unusual console table in a hallway or reception area with useful storage.
