About this item

Large 1960s Reynolds of Ludlow solid yew coffee table 182cms
These heavy coffee tables are probably the best known product of Reynolds of Ludlow . Each one is unique , and they come in various sizes , this being one of the largest we could find online .
Its been totally stripped and re-polished by our in-house time served furniture restorer so it’s looking as good as it was when it was made .
Arthur Basil Reynolds was born in 1903 . He was a trained cabinet maker with a Quaker Arts and Crafts background . After World War 2 where he served as a Major in the British Army he set up his own furniture manufacturing company on a small scale in 1946 . Their pieces were shown at the 1951 Festival of Britain , and sold through top retailers such as Heals . Arthur Reynolds died in 1960 but his son Garth took over the business and ran it until it closed in 1980 after a disastrous fire . Their most successful pieces in the 1960s and into the 1970s were these solid planked coffee tables . Unlike anything else on the market at the time their organic solidity still looks fresh and interesting today .
Yew is the hardest of all soft woods and is relatively slow growing . There is a long British tradition of using it for making the best traditional Windsor chairs . Yew veneers have a lovely interesting grain and they were used a lot in the 1970s for making Regency style reproduction furniture in the UK . White and Newton of Portsmouth tried using yew in the early 1970s on some of their contemporary pieces , but it didn’t prove to be successful .
