About this item

This simply standout laminate coffee table was produced by Warerite in the late 50s/60s. The fabulous Harlequin design was designed by Jacqueline Groag, one of Europe's most recognised mid century textile and furnishing designers.
Groag is up there with the best women designers of the 20th Century alongside Lucienne Day. Originally from Vienna, she and her modern architect husband, Jacques Groag, emigrated to Britain during World War 2. Her bold, modernist designs were a welcome alternative to the traditional textile designs of the pre-40s era and she became firmly established with designs for several eminent home decor manufacturers such as Edinburgh Weavers and Johnson Matthey dinnerware. In 1959, Warerite produced a series of Groag patterns in laminate - tables, counter and bathroom tops etc.
Not only is this table an amazing example of mid century modern pattern design and new material construction, the design itself is relatively rare in Groag laminate pieces - and most importantly - cool to the nth degree. If you are looking for a unique mid century piece, look no further.
The black background with bold triangular pattern is a playful version of the traditional pantomime Harlequin costume.
