About this item

This charming, small table is from Hebei province, northern China and dates to around 1900. It is beautifully crafted from elm wood, a much used material in furniture production for this region.

It would have originally been used as an everyday surface on the heated 'kang' platform that formed the main living space during the colder months of the year. The raised 'flanges' at each end of the top surface suggest that it would also have been used for offerings to ancestors. Carved spandrels at each side of the table taper out to meet the upward pointing flanges, adding a lovely decorative element and fluid shape to the table.

Three useful drawers with simple brass handles can be easily removed to reveal additional storage space behind them.

Use today as a coffee table- it's ideally sized to place in front of a sofa or perhaps use as a handy TV stand.
