About this item

Scarce McIntosh teak Glengarry starburst sideboard c 1968

One of our favourite McIntosh models we had 3 in quick succession about 3 years ago , having previously never having one before . All sold very quickly and we’ve been searching for another ever since ! The striking starburst veneers to the doors were a McIntosh speciality that we’ve not seen used by other makers . It was used on this and some rarer rosewood models as well as some circular coffee tables .

When we sourced this lovely sideboard it had suffered some damage by being incorrectly lifted at some stage . One of the fall front doors must have fallen whilst it was being moved and come off and then been badly repaired . It’s a problem that we’ve seen a few times with sideboards that have fall front doors unfortunately . If you look carefully you’ll see the restoration that our restorer has had to do . It’s not noticeable unless you look closely , but we have to point it out . Pieces that are 40 to 50 years old normally will have some minor wear no matter how well they have been cared for , and even after cleaning and re-polishing you may still see very small signs of wear if you look extremely closely . We have taken this repair into account in our pricing .

We have a good collection of McIntosh catalogues and it appears in the 1968 catalogue , but not in the next one we have from 1971 . Nor does it appear in the 1966 catalogues . Priced at £62 1shilling 8pence in 1968 it was that little bit more expensive than the standard Dunvegan which then was selling at £54 9 shillings 9pence ! It’s amazing how price sensitive the middle market was at the time as 10% more on the price seemed to make a massive difference to sales at the time . Today 10% doesn’t get you that much more , but back in 1968 it made a big difference .

It’s scarce because it wasn’t made for very long and the British economy was struggling in the late 1960s and early 1970s . The standard Dunvegan that’s the most commonly seen McIntosh sideboard was in production for nearly 20 years and sold in vast numbers .
