About this item

A Stunning Rosewood Vodder Sideboard, originally intended to be wall-mounted with legs added at the time of purchase in 1958 by Heals at the request of the customer, these are easily removed if preferred. Although not labelled as such, distinct Vodder design elements can be seen with this piece ranging from the scooped internal pull-out drawers to the bright lacquered doors and inlaided Rosewood circular handles.

This is a beautiful example of Danish design of the 1950s. This mixing of woods was very typical of mid-century Danish designers who used imported, durable hardwoods in all of their pieces. Colour was another hallmark of Danish mid-century design, Scandinavian designers used bold colours to add “domestic cheer” to rooms that could feel quite dark in the long winter season. As a designer of business and residential furniture, Vodder knew exactly when and where to use colour. For the home, he created bold designs with bright lacquer accents, as can also be seen in a different version of the Model 29/29A which he also enlivened with bright yellow.
