About this item

This charming old coffer comes from Shanxi, central China, circa 1800 and would have been used to store valuables.

It has two large drawers and three smaller drawers below that are each set within rounded frames with an extended top surface. The upper drawers show light relief carving in the form of 'ruyi' - a sceptre with magical power and the drawers below have much deeper symbolised carvings - 'shou' for long life and 'fu' for good luck and also depict 'lu' (a deer,) making this an intriguing and interesting piece.

It's original red and black lacquer has faded and worn with time and now reveals the natural elm wood grain beneath. making this a charming addition to a modern home.
