How to identify an antique dresser
With so many replica antique dressers out there, it’s often difficult to work out which are the real deal. Luckily, there are a few telltale signs that something is an antique. First, look for the insignia on the dresser. If you look at the base of an antique dresser you should see a small mark, either burned in, carved in or in the form of a stuck-on label. If this is missing don’t worry, you could still have an original antique dresser on your hands.
Check the carpentry of a piece too. If classical carpentry techniques have been used—such as dovetail joints—this could be an indication of the provenance of the piece. Finally, ask the dealer if you’re still unsure. Trusted dealers will have records to show the authenticity of a piece. Or if these are lost, as can happen with very old things, they’ll be able to show you the markings of a true antique dresser.
What are antique dressers made from?
Typically, antique dressers are made from hard-wearing woods. As well as classic woods such as pine and oak, Georgian and Victorian furniture makers enjoyed crafting pieces from exotic woods such as mahogany and rosewood. You’ll find striking examples of all of these woods in our antique dresser edit.
