About this item

An absolutely amazing Indian dowry or wedding chest. Made from teak, covered in tin, with detailed brass work to the front panel and iron fittings.

Originating from around 1750 , this chest is likely to have been used to contain ‘dowry items ‘ (silks, rugs, crockery etc) as part of a marriage contract. Note the internal lockable (no keys) recesses for particularly valuable items. The main body has a false bottom with lift up/ring pull covers.

Beautifully worked brass detail to the front panel. This is a highly unusual item to find its way to the UK. Originally shipped from India to the Far East and then to central London and then Dorset!
