About this item

We delighted to offer for sale this very rare original circa 1890-1900 Large double bank legal stacking oak bookcase with silver plaque gifting the piece to a Vicar and his wife.
This bookcase is very very rare, I’ve never seen another of this size, the doors retract inside the frame the same as Globe bookcases, normally these bookcases are known as stacking bookcases, they are made up of solid sections and you can add or remove pieces as you like, this bookcase is similar however instead of each section being a solid piece its five separate pieces, it totally and utterly dismantles, each section has the two sides the back, the door and the top, its like the earliest and most genius form of flat packed furniture.
The bookcase has a white metal possibly silver plaque to the front which reads as follows:-
“This bookcase together with a cheque for £137 was present by members of the congregation and others to the Rev I.S Siviter MA in commemoration of 14 years loving and faithful ministry as Vicar in the parish of St Philip & St James Ilfracombe. Also to Mrs Siviter A Piece of Antique furniture in recognition of her loving services in the parish April 12th 1939”
A very fine gift for the good lady, it dates as mentioned to around 1890-1900, its one of the earliest stacking bookcases I have ever seen. We have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, it works perfectly and can fit in its entirety in the smallest car possible when dismantled.
Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition
Please also ask any questions before you bid and not after, all of our items are sold as seen and as listed
Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
